March 19th, 2007 ~ Today, I removed my link to the so-called "American Civil Liberties Union" to express my outrage at their partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in assailing the Pennsylvania town of Hazleton.  Apparently, like many such organizations before them, the ACLU has devolved into a parody of it's former self; it's once laudable mandate, to paraphrase Kipling, "...twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools".
In light of all that has happened since my last posting, this may seem a minor topic to have brought me back online.  Certainly, we have witnessed abuses of power by the Bush/Cheney administration, committed with such frequency and blatant disdain for the American People as to be breathtaking.  However, the co-opting of the ACLU by the Corpocracy is, to me, anything but minor.  It signals a deep sickness in our body politic which will require strong medicine if we are to survive as a nation.
The ACLU once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Americans like you and me; serving as our champion before the predators sent against us by bigots and fascists of every stripe.  They gave a voice in our judicial system to Americans who would otherwise stand mute before the bar (if they ever got that far in the first place).  That's why - as an American - I was proud to include a link to the AMERICAN Civil Liberties Union on my links page.  That's why I find such bitter irony in their standing AGAINST Americans like you and me in Hazleton, PA.  That's why I must now remove them from my links page.
P.S.     If you wish to support a small town of 3,000 against the Goliaths arrayed against them, you can contribute to the City of Hazleton Legal Defense Fund.
